Since Roman times, vines have grown in the Moselle valleys and its affluents Saar and Ruwer. The trough valley has been carved by the river during millions of years and today meanders over 250 kilometres. The cultural landscape is marked by steep slopes, which are among the steepest in the world and some of which present 70 degrees of gradient, terraces, and slate soils. Some of the finest Rieslings in the world are grown here.

Landscape and soils are completely different in the the border triangle between France, Luxembourg and Germany. Shell limestone is favorable to produce great Burgundy wines.This area is also home of one of the oldest grapes: Elblng.
